Woman says she found ‘skin-like blob’ in can of Heinz baked beans but company says it’s just mould

A woman from Basildon, Essex, has shared her horror after finding “mould that looked like raw chicken” in a can of Heinz baked beans. After discovering the object, the woman – who wanted to be referred to as Viv – had her friend share photos in Facebook’s Billericay Discussion Group and many guessed what it was.

Her friend wrote on her behalf: “OK opinions on what we think this is. A friend of ours found this in her Heinz beans. I will tell you what Heinz came back with after and what it was in our opinion.”

The caption was accompanied by photos of several pink objects inside a can, then the same object tipped out onto a piece of kitchen towel. There was also a photo of the object covered in mould, which Viv’s friend said was “because during the process toing and froing it’s sat on the side”.

Viv says she opened the can because it was dented and what she claims to have found was shocking. The Essex-local told MyLondon: “Chicken. It was parts of a chicken. A chicken’s claw, a chicken’s beak. It could have been pieces of skin.

“When I opened it, I saw this big blob of skin-like substance on the top of the tin so I emptied in into a bowl.” However, Heinz says the can was damaged and the contents “spoiled”, which caused “extensive mould to grow” and “there was nothing else present in the can”.

Viv found what looks like chicken parts in her baked beans

Viv says she then left it on a piece of tissue as she spent a week in communication with Heinz. In order to return the can, Viv was waiting for a prepaid envelope. But in that time, the ‘mould’ on the counter solidified.

“All I wanted in the very beginning was the truth,” she continued to MyLondon, “someone just to tell me the truth but they’ve categorically told me and reassured me that it’s mould.

“The only mould I will agree with is the mould on the tissue that was put in a plastic bag, with a batch number or serial number, and sent to Heinz for them to take to their laboratory. I left it on my kitchen top. I should have put it in the freezer. I didn’t, but the thing was, I never heard from them for over a week.

“Obviously that went mouldy. But when I opened the tin, what was on that tissue was not mould. I’m definitely not convinced.”

But she had no luck and recalls the answer she got from a Heinz employee: “She said ‘no, I’m so sorry, we want to make you understand that it really is mould’.”

Viv says she was then “passed down the line” of various organisations, including her local council Basildon Council and Wigan council, which is responsible for the area where Heinz’s UK factory is based. Viv said that after a week of emailing back and forth, she finally received the prepaid envelope from Heinz to return the can but was advised against using it: “I was talking to the lady at the post office and she said ‘if I were you I’d pay, that way they definitely have to sign for it’. So I paid the £6.50, I sent them an email to say I’ve now posted it.

“They said they’re sorry for what I found and whatever. But they aren’t saying it’s chicken, they’re telling me it’s mould. I showed a few different friends and asked them what it is and they all thought it was a foot or a claw.”

Viv received vouchers to cover the cost of postage and some food vouchers but she’s still not satisfied: “That’s irrelevant. I wasn’t interested in the vouchers. I just wanted someone to tell me the truth.”



But Heinz told MyLondon: “We were very sorry to hear about Viv’s experience with one of our products since the quality of our foods is always our top priority. We have carried out a full investigation of this complaint and can confirm that the can has become damaged at some point after leaving our factory, as can be seen from the images that were shared with us.

“Unfortunately, this has allowed air into the can causing the contents to spoil and extensive mould to grow. There was nothing else present in the can. We have shared the results of the investigation with Viv and as a gesture of goodwill together with our apologies we have provided vouchers and a store gift card.”
