Orwigsburg police are warning area businesses to watch out for scam artists.
The department issued a statement on Facebook noting that it has received several reports of attempted scams targeting local businesses in the Orwigsburg area. A caller will claim to be a government official scheduling an inspection of the business and to expect a kit sent by FedEx that will help with the inspection. A second caller will claim to be a FedEx delivery man claiming they haven’t paid the invoice for the kit and will request payment through a wire transfer.
Police reminded residents and business owners that if something seems suspicious regarding these types of calls, it’s usually bogus. Always try vetting the caller and don’t take their word as to who they say they are. It’s typically a good idea to request a callback number which you can then search on the internet to see if it is an official number.
And remember that gift cards and wire transfers via Coinstar, Western Union, PayPal, etc. are not used in the world of official government business and are a major red flag.
