Church news

Stations of the Cross – The Stations take place after Mass in Oylegate on Friday mornings during Lent.

The Future of Oylegate Parish – Our new Bishop, Ger Nash in his recent Pastoral letter reminds us that church life in our parishes will undergo change in the coming years. People of Faith in our parishes will be invited to participate in this new reality. Today priests are older and fewer in number and the day is approaching when there may not be a resident priest in Oylegate and Glenbrien Parish. We now have to begin to prepare for this new reality.

As a first step we will hold a parish meeting in the community centre on Thursday, March 24, at 8 p.m. We need to bring together a team of people to look after the parish church finances (the future of the weekly envelopes and Parish Draw) along with the maintenance of the church, Parochial House, Prayer Gardens and the use of the church car park.

Weekday Masses – Glenbrien: Tuesday and Thursday 9.30 a.m. Oylegate: Wednesday and Friday at 9.30 a.m.

Date for your Diary – Bishop Ger Nash will celebrate the weekend Masses in Oylegate and Glenbrien on May 21 and 22.

Field Names Group

We are proud to announce our new community initiative whose aim is to record and publish the ‘Field Names’ of Rathangan/Cleariestown along with their history, features, name origin and folklore.

As this is a community initiative we will be asking for as much support as possible from people in the community to aid us with their local knowledge. What we are looking for is things such as names of fields, crossroads, walls etc. If you could provide us with the name, location and ideally background/history of the field that would be great too but not essential.

We hope everyone will get involved in this endeavour to ensure that these old names and local knowledge is preserved through time.
